Bohemian Hair
INSIDER TRICK: Keep the waves loose and natural,” says Symonds, who used a one-inch curling iron and wrapped large sections around it to get the subtle curl. Then she created two loose braids on either side of the center part and finished with Redken Hairspray #18 and some Redken Vinyl Glam Spray.

Fishtail Braid
WHAT MAKES IT COOL The intricacy of the fishtail is a fun twist on the side-braid trend, says Lewis's stylist Ben Cooke.
GET IT (DON'T SWEAT IT!) 1. Pull hair to one side, but don’t secure. 2. Divide into two even pieces. 3. Take a small section of hair from under one of the pieces and wrap it over that section and under the other. 4. Repeat, alternating sides through the length of the ponytail. 5. Secure with a clear band, then gently massage braid to pull out stray strands.

Ballerina Bun
WHAT MAKES IT COOL Sleek in the front, texured in the back—and a lot easier than it looks. “It's a sophisticated updo that emphasizes the cheekbones,” says Tresseme stylist Craig Gangi, who created the look.
GET IT (DON'T SWEAT IT!) 1. Apply anti-frizz cream to damp strands and blow dry straight.2. Pull hair into a high ponytail, secure with an elastic. 3. Twist strands around the base of the ponytail, pinning as you go. 4. Tease along the bottom of the bun to keep it from feeling too prim.

Undone Pony
WHAT MAKES IT COOL Volume at the crown combined with loose, face-framing layers give this ponytail a sexy '60s-bombshell feel. "It has a modern shape that’s chic but effortless-looking," says Jessica Biel’s stylist, Adir Abergel.
GET IT (DON'T SWEAT IT!) 1. Spritz texturizing spray on damp hair and let air-dry (this style also works well on the naturally gritty texture of hair that hasn’t been washed in a day). 2. Back-comb lightly at the crown for lift. 3. Pull into a ponytail at ear level and secure with an elastic. 4. Loosen pieces around the face.

7 New Ways to Rock a Braid
The Half Braided Pony
EXPERT TIP Abergel suggests thinking of this as a ponytail, not a braid. Secure your hair tightly at the back of your head just above ear level, then braid down to the bottom of your ear lobe. Tie it off with a second elastic, and wave the ends with a small curling iron. One word of wisdom: "This look won't work if you hair isn't longer than your shoulder blades," he says.

The Angled French Braid
EXPERT TIP Start with wavy, beachy hair—silky straight strands won't hold the style—and part on the side. French braid from one side of your part to the other, working all the way along the hairline to behind the opposite ear. Leave the end of the braid loose or twist it into a low cluster.

The Loose Hairline Braid
EXPERT TIP Part your hair deep and on the side, then braid a wide section across your hairline. "It's okay if it slips down onto your forehead," says Abergel. Secure with crisscrossed pins low on the back of the head, and gather the rest of your hair into a messy knot.

The Double French Braid
EXPERT TIP Part the hair in the center and divide into three sections. Twist the middle portion back, leaving the sides out, says Abergel. Then, loosely French braid the two side sections to the nape of the neck before wrapping them into a chignon with the rest of your hair.

The Peekaboo Braid
EXPERT TIP Use a combination of beach spray and wax pomade to rough-up your hair, Abergel advises. "Tease and backcomb the section you're going to braid before you start. That keeps it looking undone, haphazard and not too perfect," he says.

The Side Braid
EXPERT TIP This version works best if you have long layers. "The pieces slipping down in front are key," he says. Wave your hair first and start braiding very close to the nape of the neck. "And keep the ends undone—a dab of styling cream will help break them up," he adds.

The Fishtail Braid
EXPERT TIP This braid isn't a French braid—meaning it shouldn't start at the top of your head. Instead, Abergel suggests you begin braiding just above the ear. (As for the fishtail technique, simply break the ponytail into two ropes, take a skinny section from the left and add to the right, then repeat to the ends of your hair.) Finish by twisting a section of hair around the end and pinning in place. "It will look more authentic and hand-done," Abergel says.
